Separating the Truth from the "Truthiness"
We all know that hardly anyting happens in the world today without it being broadcast in someway or another to the general public. The media seems to infiltrate ever part of our daily lives. With this constant coverage of important events, it is no wonder that many of the stories we see and hear are represented and told in different ways. So how can we make sure to get the truth about the stories being reported, and not the "truthiness?" First and foremost, we must practice critical thinking, discernment, and use our knowledge about media effects theories and apply them to the stories that we view. When you first see or hear a story being reported, you must ask yourself the following questions, "Is this a credible source for news?" "Is the network, or station representing all sides of the story fairly?" "How might the reporters be framing this story based on their own bias and agenda?" And finally, "What critical information may be being left out, and how can I gain access to it?" One way to get the most out of your news is to gather information from many different sources. In this way it will be able to clearly identify networks bias, and get all your stories, and facts straight.
